Tide Places

Research Residency

Laura Põld, Lou Sheppard and Laura Kozak

Tide Places was a research residency exploring the ecological and social dynamics of the intertidal zone in the eastern basin of False Creek Flats, with a focus on histories of ecological and cultural erasure. The project emerged from an evolving open studio collaboration between Estonian artist Laura Põld and Canadian artist Lou Sheppard, joined in this iteration by Laura Kozak. Põld and Sheppard have been working together since 2020 to imagine post-industrial and post-human possibilities, material agencies, queer and feminist futurities.

Together with Senaqwila Wyss, Germaine Kohstudents and students from Eesti Kunstiakadeemia (EKA – Estonian Academy of Arts) and Emily Carr University, Senaqwila Wyss, we explored intertidal areas and learned from caretakers of these places, the materials and beings that were present and absent, those that make a home here now, and those that may be here in the future. The types of exchange embedded in the project attempted to respond to the rhythms of an intertidal zone.
